the wonder remains."

Dear askbrowning,

What's with the name "rednow"?  Someone told me that it's wonder spelled backwards... is that true?

                        Just Wondering,

                                    Bob (Arkansas)

Bob-o,

That is true, rednow is wonder spelled backwards.  We took that little trick from Harry Carey.  When that guy got really old (and I'm sure his drinking habits played some role in this as well) he started to pronounce different words backwards.  For example Sammy Sosa became "Asos" and Shawn Dunston became "Notsnud."  But that's not the only place the name came from.

The creators of rednow began looking for a name for their website way back in 1986 (their foresight helped them plan to launch such a website even before Al Gore created the internet).  You see 1986 was a crazy time in our world, the Cold War was making everyone a little tense, even the creators of rednow.  They knew that if they were going to succeed they we going to have to navigate a difficult political environment.  They realized that they would have to appeal to both the communists and the capitalists.  Hence the name rednow.  "Red" of course referring to the favorite color of all socialists and "now" referring to capitalism's propensity for instant gratification.  With the name rednow they had struck the perfect balance in a difficult political climate.

As the creators of rednow walked a fine line in a difficult world other people began to take notice.  Soon the name rednow was being used by 67% of major companies in the western hemisphere, as well as by a large portion of non-profit organizations world wide.  Bono jumped on the bandwagon and created his brand (Product)RedNow and ESPN's flagship show, Sportscenter, began running a daily spot in July of 2007 called "Who's (Red) Now."  But the creators of rednow worried that they would be washed away by the flood of rednow names and eventually took their case to the Supreme Court of the U.S. of A.  In a landmark decision, known as Brown v. Wade, it was ruled that they were the sole owners of the name rednow.  (Product) RedNow became (Product) Red, Sportscenters' "Who's (Red) Now" became "Who's Now," and the annual CD featuring that past year's pop music hits went from being named "RedNow That's What I Call Music" to just "NOW That's What I Call Music."

So there you have it Bobby, that's how rednow came to get its name.  It was a long road, but like I always say, it's the journey, not that destination.

                                                Sincerely,

About "askbrowning"

Along with a discussion of wonder comes questions. Questions about the meaning of life, questions about the origins of life, questions about why all of Nickelback's songs sound exactly the same.

Of course there are times when we must allow mystery to be mysterious, but at other times that is not enough. There are those of us who must ask the questions that burn in our guts like a fire that is really, really, really hot; so hot that it's not even orange, but is a blue-colored flame fire. But where in this world shall we turn when our guts burn with these questions? Who among us can we ask these questions of? When there is no one else to ask... ASKBROWNING.

That is why we at rednow have created the askbrowning section. If you have a question that perplexes, please hesitate no longer; send your question to askbrowning [at] rednow [dot] com.
