“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is
the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is
a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is
as good as dead: his eyes are closed.” - Albert Einsten
November 17th is the birth date of Scotty Moorhead. He would have turned forty-one this year had an evening swim in 1997 not turned tragic. While singing along to Led Zeppelin, he jumped into the Mississippi River fully dressed. It was three days before his body was found in a marina.
You may not have ever heard of Scotty Moorhead, but if you are a music fan, you know him by a different name: Jeff Buckley.
Too young to hold on and too old to just break free and run
I was given a copy of Grace right around early November many years ago. If you are anything like me, when you get a new album that you love, you play it and play it, almost forgetting any other music even exists. Often this causes certain albums to become associated with certain times of year for me, and consequently, Grace has always been an Autumn/holiday season disc for me. I pulled it out again this week in memory of Buckley, and I encourage you to do the same.
Grace is the only studio album Buckley produced before his death, and it is held by many to be one of the greatest of its time. David Bowie said it was one of ten albums he would take with him if stranded on a deserted island.
Below are a few samples for those of you who have yet to hear Buckley’s beautiful falsetto voice. An album that has both songs to rock out with and emotional love ballads to be drawn into…Grace is something to be experienced.
Enjoy.
Hallelujah (lyrics)
Words/Music by Leonard Cohen
Well I heard there was a secret chord That David played, and it pleased the Lord But you don't really care for music, do ya? Well it goes like this The fourth, the fifth The minor fall and the major lift The baffled king composing Hallelujah Hallelujah
Well Your faith was strong but you needed proof You saw her bathing on the roof Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you she tied you to her kitchen chair And she broke your throne and she cut your hair And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah Hallelujah
Well baby I've been here before I know this room and I've walked this floor I used to live alone before I knew ya I've seen your flag on the marble arch Love is not a victory march It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah Hallelujah
Well there was a time when you let me know What's really going on below But now you never show that to me do you? And remember when I moved in you? And the holy dove was moving too And every breath we drew was Hallelujah Hallelujah
Well maybe there's a God above But all I've ever learned from love Was how to shoot somebody who'd OUT DREW YA And it's not a cry that you hear at night It's not somebody who's seen the light It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah Hallelujah
Last Goodbye (lyrics)
by Jeff Buckley
this is our last goodbye i hate to feel the love between us die but it's over just hear this and then i'll go you gave me more to live for more than you'll ever know
this is our last embrace must i dream and always see your face why can't we overcome this wall well, maybe it's just because i didn't know you at all
kiss me, please kiss me but kiss me out of desire, babe, and not consolation you know it makes me so angry 'cause i know that in time i'll only make you cry, this is our last goodbye
did you say "no, this can't happen to me," and did you rush to the phone to call was there a voice unkind in the back of your mind saying maybe you didn't know him at all you didn't know him at all, oh, you didn't know
well, the bells out in the church tower chime burning clues into this heart of mine thinking so hard on her soft eyes and the memories offer signs that it's over... it's over
