"The truly ‘mysterious' object is beyond our apprehension... not only because our knowledge has certain irremovable
limits, but because in it we come upon something inherently ‘wholly other'... and before which we
therefore recoil in a wonder that strikes us chill and numb." - Rudolph Otto
Title: Planet Earth [Sigor Rus] Year Released: 2007 Type: Advertisement
Reeses had these great commercials for Peanut Butter Cups where one guy would be walking around with a chocolate bar and another would be cruising around with an open jar of peanut butter, and thanks to some Keystone Cop's kind of moment, they would slam into each other. The random collision would produce a chocolate/peanut butter fusion that we would forever after know as the Peanut Butter Cup. Thus proving, that the bringing together of two great things can produce an even greater third.
The transcendence of The Discovery Channel's Planet Earth series has already been mentioned here at rednoW. Likewise, the beauty and wonder of Sigor Rus music as been put before us.
But what do you get when you bring these two things together?
4 minutes and 42 seconds of Holiness.
As Coldplay sings, "we live in a beautiful world..."
If you are stuck, as I often am, in the middle of a concrete jungle that feels far from anything beautiful, meaningful or transcendent, this short spot of Planet Earth may just be what you need to remember that there is More to this world than we often see. There are peaks and valleys, desserts and oceans, rainbows and rain clouds, cold and warmth that all define this place we live and the lives we lead.
While this spot will make you want to watch the series it promotes - I find myself much more drawn to know what The Creator of it all.
That is just unbelievably awesome. Thanks for sharing, Eric. I've been a HUGE fan of planet earth (the series) since the first preview I saw. Mostly, I think, because I've been a huge fan of planet earth for as long as I can remember.
As you mentioned, I feel a lot of things while watching that video. I want to watch the whole series again. I'm bewildered at how they got some of those shots. I wish my computer screen was bigger and the video of higher quality.
But mostly, more than anything... I feel thankfulness. I feel completely drawn to a Creator who created everything I'm watching and then created humans to enjoy it, and through that, enjoy Him. I feel so thankful that I live in a place that is so astoundingly and obviously constantly reflecting glory. We exist a world SOAKED in the beauty and joy its Creator.
It makes me think of Dallas Willard in the Divine Conspiracy when he's discussing the joy of God and how He is constantly experiencing the fullness of all beauty and all joy in all places at all times. Um, that's a rather big-ish thought (and one to contemplate perhaps later). But it's fascinating to me. I love that I can feel a sliver of that wonder by just watching a video (much less seeing some of those views in person). I love that we're wired that way... to enjoy.
