basketball_is_brotherhood.jpgI learn a lot about myself and about human nature from watching commercials. No matter how you feel about the advertising and marketing industry, you have to admit that the reason the industry even exists at all is because advertisers have an uncanny ability to understand what makes people tick and to move people in some way using that knowledge. The newest Adidas advertising campaign carries the tag-line "Basketball is a Brotherhood."

I'll just say it, these ads are inspiring... and for all the right reasons. Unlike some ads that "inspire" buyers by promising something that can't really be achieved, I think these ads promote legitimate community and, as cheesy as it sounds, brotherhood. (I realize that this ad campaign isn't very gender neutral, and I do see that as a problem, but for the moment I'd like to focus on some other parts of this campaign without slighting that fact that women are totally left out by these ads).

A moment. What is it? How long is it? How deep is it?

Paul Auster (writer) and Wayne Wang (director) played with these questions in the 1995 film Smoke. There is a memorable scene in which cigar store owner Auggie, played by Harvey Keitel, invites writer-friend Paul (William Hurt) to see his "corner of the world" project - a collection of photos taken at 8 a.m. every morning in front of his Brooklyn cigar store. Year after year, Auggie captures this particular moment from the exact same location - each snapshot directed at the same "corner of the world." As Auggie pulls out album after album, Paul quickly blows through the pages commenting on the absurdity and monotony of the seemingly "same" moment in time. Auggie interrupts the oblivion with "You'll never get it if you don't slow down my friend."

The doors of the top law schools in America stand wide open for Christopher McCandless after he graduates from Emory University, but rather than follow the path of “The American Dream” towards financial gain and personal comfort, he strikes out on a road less traveled.

Sean Penn brings Jon Krakauer’s book Into The Wild to the screen by getting a great performance from Emile Hirsch (Christopher McCandless) as well as solid support from better known Hollywood players like Vince Vaughn, Catherine Keener and William Hurt.

In a time when consumerism in America has never been more intense and pervasive, Christopher McCandless’ story stands as a picture of what it looks like to leave that all behind.  But Into The Wild is more than a cultural critique or a call to action—it is a look at the danger of swapping idealisms.

Throughout the last decade, there has been consistent speculation on just how (or how much) the internet will change various (or all) industries. There is no doubt that enormous shifts have occurred with all informational based services. I mean... when was the last time you pulled out your fold out road map to find directions? When was the last time you flipped through a phone book for a phone number?

Of course, the entertainment industry has made significant moves as a result of the online world. Even if you are not purchasing music online, you are likely previewing/listening/discovering it there first. The music video sector has also shifted in the last decade but not all as a result of the online world. Viewers apparently lost interest in the "promotional" direction record labels were committed to and MTV apparently decided to become a reality network in the mean time. Seriously, when was the last time you saw a music video on MTV?

Why does anyone watch a particular video or film? I am guessing that most people at least "initially" gravitate towards a particular piece due to some familiarity with a person or persons involved. Why does anyone stop watching a particular video or film? Loss of interest? No direction? Too strange?

If any of the above is remotely accurate, the following music video does not have a lot going for it. For starters, few people are familiar with Emily Haines. Second, the first 15 seconds of the video involves a slow zoom of a girl in a pig mask. To top it off, the entire music video is filmed in the "negative". (Will make sense once you hit play)
