Description Music Video Title: Fix You Artist: Coldplay The popularity of Fix You is somewhat surprising considering how independent our culture has become. How does a song, based on the idea that we need someone else to be fixed, move so many people? Maybe it's because we all get to a point in our life where we know ours and the world’s needs are deeper than our abilities to attend to them. What brings us to this place may be that our lives are filled with questions – many of them are without an easy or quick answer. Some of them may have no real answer at all. Uncertainty and doubt are often thought of as the opposite of faith, but this is never the way it should be seen. In fact, fear is put opposite of faith in the biblical text, not doubt – maybe this is why ‘do not fear’ is the most oft given command in the Bible. Questions are not the opposite of believing, they are the gateway to deeper belief. Running away from questions only leaves us feeling like we hold beliefs in something that don't stand up to testing - or worse, that we have a non-functional theology. Join the chorus found throughout history by asking your questions and seeking for answers. I was listening to this song a few nights ago and thinking something similar. However, I wonder if the popularity of this song is based more on the listener taking the position of the person being fixed. I am inclined to believe the universal appeal of Fix You is not found in the recognition that we need someone to help fix us but in the desire to be attended to, to be fixed. I don’t know if the pervading thought of the American culture at large is to attend to another’s deeper needs as much as it is an intense longing to be attended to; to be valued. Is this part of the natural progression of individualism in our culture or is this the consequence of individualism? I think the album is full of the questions and desires that plague us all, especially in an extremely individualistic culture. In What If you here the question of worth, value, and importance (What if you should decide/that you don’t want me there by your side/That you don’t want me there in your life). In Talk you hear the difficulty of the accepting the truth, the uncertainty of what is to come, and the desire to have someone to talk to about it (Oh, brother I can’t/I can’t get through/I’ve been trying hard to reach you/cause I don’t know what to do/Oh, brother I can’t believe it’s true/I’m so scared about the future/and I want to talk to you). Coldplay’s X&Y seems to be laced with the desire to be in community and relationship and the fear of being let down and attempting to make it through life alone.
