David, here's another impression of the show that was passed on to me. John Wilson seems to be getting at the same point that it seemed that most people weren't seeing the story that Beam was laying out... Alas, I was one of those people in this case, as I did cheer the song Wilson writes about, though I didn't pick up on what Wilson did... http://www.christianitytoday.com/books/web/2008/feb18.html - Matt Browning

Thanks Matt. That helps. I'm trying to imagine people cheering when Beam didn't swear. Crazy. Again, thanks for capturing this. - David Swanson

That's a fair question David, and I realize that maybe my comments came off as me saying that I was a superior concert goer/listener or something... but that is not how I meant it. I just think people were caught up in the swearing thing (cheering each time Beam didn't swear) so that the people who I talked to after the show, and who I overheard (I'm a bit of an ease-dropper) seemed to be chatting about the swearing but no one mentioned the larger story that was taking place. - Matt Browning

Thanks for this review Matt... really insightful. I appreciate your perspective on images and stories in Beam's songs. I think you've articulated one of the things that makes his music so captivating. Each time "Dead Man's Will" (from In the Reins with Calexico) plays, my wife looks over at me because she knows I can't keep my eyes open during the song. The sound and lyrics resonate in some deep places.
Give this stone to my brother
Cuz we found it playing in the barnyard
Many years ago

Give this bone to my father
He'll remember hunting in the hills
When I was 10 years old
All that to say, thanks for capturing the show for us. One question: you wrote,
I think this says something about stories and narrative and about how we see our life in general. Do we see our lives as simple, isolated micro events or do we see each event in a large way, as fitting together with the story arc that is our life? Judging by most of the crowd at Iron & Wine's Wheaton College show is seems that the answer is mostly the former.
I'm curious, how did you notice this sentiment among those at the concert? - David Swanson
