the Effects of ViolencePosted by Matt Browning in Untagged |
My mom always told me not to hit other because it "wasn't nice." But what if violence is more than just a social faux pas. Maybe there's more to the effects of violence than just the obvious. Maybe MLK, Ghandi and Jesus knew something that we are still figuring out. An A.P. story caught my attention this morning as I browsed Yahoo news. The headline read "Report: 121 Veterans Linked to Killings." You can follow the link to read the article, but what the report is getting at is that a disproportionately high number of men and woman who have returned from Iraq and Afghanistan have been charged with or committed murder after returning from war. The effects of the violence these men and women experience while overseas is common enough that a movie called "Stop Loss " is scheduled to come out in the near future. "Stop Loss" deals with a soldier who refuses to return to Iraq after having already served one tour of duty. It seems that maybe people are starting to wonder if perpetrators of violence are not also in some ways the victims. That there is some sort of back-draft when it comes to violence.
