strapped to the pewsPosted by steve sherwood in prayer, faith, doubt, Annie Dillard |
It's Tuesday night and I'm relaxed and pretty content. That's kind of surprising because a week ago I was freaked out stressed. My boss was in some high level meetings that really looked like they were going to go badly. Really badly. I wastrying to figure out where my next job would be.
I'm a Christian so I'm supposed to believe in prayer, so I spent the day praying that things would go well. In my heart though, I really didn't think anything good was going to happen.
And then, as a total shock to me, things did a complete turn around. The meeting went great and the crisis passed. God showed up and moved in stunning ways.
This blog isn't about God doing things in big ways. It's about how, after being a Christian for over 30 years, I was shocked by this fact. Annie Dillard, a very witty and deep thinking woman, once wrote something like this (I'm too lazy to look up the exact quote from 'Teaching a stone to talk'), "We have no idea what we're doing. Showing up for church in our pretty hats and Sunday best. We're like children playing on the floor with TNT. If we really believed any of the words we pray to God every Sunday, we'd strap ourselves to the pews and issue crash helmets when we walk in the door because the God of the Universe might show up at any moment!"
Well said.
