"The truly ‘mysterious' object is beyond our apprehension... not only because our knowledge has certain irremovable limits, but because in it we come upon something inherently ‘wholly other'... and before which we therefore recoil in a wonder that strikes us chill and numb." - Rudolph Otto

avatar Description:
Currently, I'm spending most of my time either teaching undergrad Bible or ministry classes or working on my Dmin in emerging theology. So, I'm reading a lot of the time and talking most of the rest. I'd love to blog about interesting things that pop up in both contexts and invite folks to interact with me if they'd like. It's hard to say how often I'll post, but I anticipate that I'll be most active during the school year. I also really like questions so I might just post some and see if anyone wants to interact around them.

Why is this Friday 'good'?

Posted by steve sherwood in Prodigal SonloveJesusHoseagraceGood FridayEmergent Village

For people who call themselves Christians of followers of Jesus, one day of the year is called particularly 'good.' Strangely, it's the day of Jesus' death. That seems quite odd, if not outright morbid. What'

Why is this so hard when the reward is so great?

I have recently been a part of a couple professional situations where folks in positions of leadership have made strong decisive moves that have had big fallout. Their moves have caused pain and confusion for people close

Thanksgiving

Posted by steve sherwood in ThanksgivingjoyChestertonbeauty

It's Thanksgiving time. For a lot of us, that might not mean much more than food, football and getting up bizarrely early on Friday to go shopping. Still, I bet most of us have at least a moment or two where we stop and think about what

night of wonder?

Posted by steve sherwood in wonderjoychildrencandy

I move in Christian circles where a lot of people really don't like Halloween. They don't like the fact that a lot of kids dress up like witches and ghosts. They don't like the fact, urban myth or actual truth, that satanists use this night

It's Tuesday night and I'm relaxed and pretty content. That's kind of surprising because a week ago I was freaked out stressed. My boss was in some high level meetings that really looked like they were going to go badly. Really badly. I was

Make Some Noise, Please!

Posted by steve sherwood in Untagged

I had a most unsettling experience in church a week or so ago. A lot of churches say the 'Lord's Prayer' every Sunday. You may or may not be familiar with it: "Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed by your name, your kingdom come
